Dual Souls of Edinburgh

Instead of “aye”, more than 50% of Scottish voted “naw” during the 2014 independence referendum. It remains a controversial issue among the UK after Brexit. However Scotland itself enjoys self-governance with the creation of a Scottish Parliament in 1999, Scotland and England cannot be mistaken for each other.

The characteristic of Edinburgh illustrates the sense of dual identities. The Old Town is embraced by the exquisite buildings, dating from the 12th century. Between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, it feels like stepping back in time amongst the cobbled streets and irregular architecture.

Dominating the skyline for centuries, Edinburgh Castle is perhaps one of the prominent landscapes. The mighty fortress played an important role, from the royal residence to the military garrison. Stone of Destiny. Mons Meg. One o’Clock Gun. All in one stands on Castle Rock.

History is not dull when it is contained in a city. Heading to Hogwarts School with JK Rowling, when savoring the traditional Haggis in the Elephant House cafe. A pudding composed of the liver, heart, and lungs of a sheep. Taking selfies when strolling around Victoria Street along the steep slope and narrow lane.

The New Town, on the contrary, incarnates the British side of the city. Built between 1766 and 1820, it is surrounded by George Street and Princes Street. Housing of bourgeoisie marked its history of the Scottish union with England in 1707. The Scottish National Gallery shapes another distinctive vibe.

Calton Hill stands at the end of the New Town. Visitors will be astonished by its panoramic views by witnessing Arthur's Seat. It owns a collection of historic monuments. A National Monument to commemorate the servicemen in the Napoleonic Wars. A City Observatory to measure the distance of the stars.

A box of national treasuries is yet to be unveiled underneath. Natural landscapes in the Highlands, such as the Isle of Skye, Loch Ness, and the Glenfinnan Viaduct. Remarkable architecture in Glasgow, namely Clyde Arc Bridge, People’s Palace and Winter Gardens. I bet it is always an “aye” to explore Scotland.
