“A Ma Gao” refers to a place of A Ma, in honour of the Goddess of Seafarers. The Portuguese reached the city in the early 1550s, they adopted and changed it into Macao. Under the permission of Guangdong's mandarins, the merchant-explorers established an enter-pot for global trade, which contributed to the golden age before the Dutch and British rivalries.

The 400-year colonial rule shaped the unique intercultural Macao. Destroyed by fire in 1835, the Ruins of St. Paul’s symbolised how Baroque-Mannerist architecture integrates into oriental motifs. As the facade of the Church of Mater Dei, it stood adjacent to the St. Paul's College, which was the first western-style university in the Far East with an academic programme.

At the entrance to the sheltered Inner Harbour, A-Ma Temple stood before the city of Macao came into being. It is believed that the sea goddess could predict luck and turn danger into safety. The worship of various deities in a single complex marks the temple as an exemplary representation of Chinese culture, which is inspired by multiple religious and folk beliefs.

As one of the global gambling capitals, the industry accounts for 80% of its tax revenue. In the 16th century, streets of this trading post were occupied by the immigrant-labourer gamblers, which forced the government to legalise gambling and casinos by 1847. Even with the handover to China, gambling is allowed to remain in this Special Administrative Region.

Due to the prosperity of the gaming as well as the MICE industry, casino resorts are readily available in Macau.
