During the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal's pioneering role in world exploration turned on a new chapter of the Discoveries. Prince Henry the Navigator discovered the Azores, Madeira and Cape Verde. The 52m Monument to the Discoveries, representing the prow of a caravel, honors his great contribution.

Along with the Jerónimos Monastery, is another World Heritage Site - the Belem Tower. Built between the banks of the Tagus River, the landmark was a strategic defense point. King Manuel I constructed the bulwarks with built-in casemates, to prevent the entry of enemies to this worldwide center in the Discoveries.

Cabo da Roca is an intersection between Sintra and Cascais. Situated in the westernmost point of mainland Europe, it was once considered as the edge of the world. Standing beside the windswept cliff and barren lands, as if you are embracing the Atlantic Ocean, while amazed by the panoramic view over the Serra de Sintra.

Designed by the Italian architect Luigi Manini, the Quinta da Regaleira is a masterpiece showing his obsession with mystery and magic castle. Eccentric mansion. Carved pinnacles. And a hidden passageway. Make a wish upon or under the Initiatic Well, alongside the secretive spiral stairs.

Standing above the massive boulders, the Castillo dos Mouros is one of the footprints left by the Moorish. The mighty castle once played a defensive role for the entire region. It was stormed by the Christian Crusaders, yet restored by King Ferdinand II.

Painted terraces. Decorative battlements. Mythological statues. The hedonistic Palacio Nacional da Pena stands in stark contrast to the lush forest. My gaze got lost amongst its charms ornate by the sunset. Who could resist the temptation of Sintra? Even the Kings regarded it as a summer resort.

If you are tired of walking, why not take tram 28? It brings you to the Rua Augusta Arch, which commemorates the 1755 earthquake. The São Jorge Castle, the fortification which was built by the Moorish. You can also enjoy Lisbon's great landscape built by Azulejo via the Santa Justa Lift.

And the smell? It guides you to the BEST Pastel de Nata, bifanas, and Pastel de Bacalhau…
