Reach to the Roof of Japan

Nagano (長野) boasts the highest mountain ranges in the country, so it is regarded as the “roof of Japan”. We can reach the sky via visiting the Matsumoto Castle (松本城). It was built in the 16th century. Stepping into its wooden interiors, we can admire the medieval weapons in the oldest surviving castles of Japan. Interestingly, the castle is coined as “Crow Castle” with its jet-black outlook.

Not only is Matsumoto (松本) a gateway to the Japan Alps, it is also the birthplace of the artist Yayoi Kusama (草間弥生). Spend the day in the museums. The Matsumoto City Museum of Art features the dotted creations by this avant-garde artists; while the Japan Ukiyo-e Museum houses over 100,000 pieces, including the works of Katsushika Hokusai (北斎葛飾) and Hiroshige Utagawa (歌川広重).

A two-hour train ride brings one from Tokyo to the Suwa (諏訪). Step into the mythic past of the region by visiting the Suwa-Taisha Shrine. Founded in the 6th century, it consists of 4 separate shrines with their unique atmosphere. As the one of oldest shrines in Japan, it offers an experience of diving into the mist, which has been implied in the “Nihon Shoki”, which is the second-oldest book in Japan.

Situated at the center of Suwa region, Lake Suwa is more than just a filming location for the Japanese animation “Your Name.” Tateishi Park (立石公園) and Akasunasaki Park (赤砂崎公園) are two best spots offers the panoramic view of the region. Under the Yatsugatake Mountains, visitors can either cycle or jog along its shores with its 16km track. Rental cycles are available outside the stations.

Due to the abundance of buckwheat growing, Nagano is famous for soba noodles. Its quality and the binding agent used alter its aroma and texture. Shops commonly serve two-eight soba, referring to the ratio of wheat to the flour. Mori or zaru soba are served on a bamboo slotted plate with tsuyu broth; while Kakke or bukkake soba is served with tsuyu broth which you pour over the soba when ready to eat.
