Plitvice Lakes, which is situated in the Mala Kapela mountain and the Lička Plješivica mountain, is the oldest and largest national park in Croatia, lying in the county of Lika-Senj and Karlovac. It was proclaimed as the first national park of Croatia. The boundaries of this GREEN park were expanded in 1997, making it cover an area under 300 kilometer square currently.

Lakes cover less than 1% of the total area. It comprises 16 lakes, and is divided into the Upper and Lower lakes. The twelve Upper lakes were formed on impermeable dolomite rock, allowing larger, with more indented shores than the four Lower lakes. The latter were formed in permeable limestone substrate, cut into a deep canyon with steep cliffs, ending in waterfalls.

Carbon dioxide enriched water penetrates via fissures in the carbonate rock, dissolving the rock as it flows, creating various surface and subsurface. Tufa is hollow, porous rock created from the deposition of dissolved calcium carbonate in the water by plants, algae and mosses, forming the karst landscape, and being inscribed onto the UNESCO World Heritage List.

About 30 km from the national park, there is a “mini-Plitvice” named Rastoke. The village name stems from the word “rastakati”, which means “to pour out” and suggests the roaring water. The geological makeup of the two water systems is identical. The enchanting landscape is complemented by the water mills, whose wheels giggle happily as Slunjčica tickles them.

It is believed that fairies have lived in this area since ancient times. During the storytelling time around the pale light of the oil lamp, they would take the horses and send the millers home, while the mills were grinding corn and wheat. Vilina Kosa, i.e. the Fairy’s Hair, is the SILVER waterfall where the fairies gather during the daytime.
