Transcending from Industrial Past to Cultural Future
As the second largest city in Taiwan, Kaohsiung has managed to shake off an industrial past thoroughly. From shipyards, heavy industry and petrochemicals, to a green, services-oriented cultural city. It has the second busiest airport in Taiwan, and is 1.5 hours from Taipei by High Speed Rail. After the Yellow Rubber Ducks and BLACKPINK, what’s more to be discovered?
The Great Harbor Bridge (大港橋) illustrates its innovative ambition. Spanning 110 meters, its resembles the shape of a shell and dolphin. One can enjoy the urban waterfront of Kaohsiung Port in the observation deck. Don't miss the 3-minute rotation show at 3 pm every day, which gives you a new perspective to appreciate this longest cross-port rotating bridge in Asia.
Collision is regarded as a driving force at Pier-2 (駁二藝術特區). For the first time, the firework celebration of Double Ten Day was launched at Pier-2 Warehouses of Kaohsiung in 2000, also in Taipei. Some local artists later established the Pier-2 Artistic Development Association, before the Kaohsiung City Bureau of Cultural Affairs took over to build a cultural living hub in 2006.
Covered a total of 18 to 20 hectares, this once-abandoned-and-forgotten warehouse is one of the largest local cultural and creative parks. It divided into 3 areas: Dayong (大勇), Dayi (大義) and Penglai (蓬萊). Besides the regular exhibition, we have participated in the immersive experience based on the “Greed Island”, which is the fourth major story arc in the Hunter x Hunter series.
Situated at the Formosa Boulevard Station, the Dome of Light (光之穹頂) was created by the Italian Narcissus Quagliata. As the world's largest public art installation made from individual pieces of colored glass, the dome tells the story of human life chronologically: Water - the womb of life; Earth: prosperity and growth; Light: the creative spirit; and Fire: destruction and rebirth.
Opposite to the Yancheng District (鹽埕區), a bike tour in the Qijin District (旗津區) allows you to further explore its greenery alongside the Beach Park. From the historical Cihou Lighthouse, the art installation Rainbow Arch (旗津彩虹教堂), to the Sea Pearls (海珍珠) neighboring the Shell Museum facing faces the ocean. Embraced by it and bask in the sea breeze and warm rays.
