What-The-HELL Tour in Oita

Hot springs are probably one of the reasons to visit Japan. Located in the eastern Kyushu, Oita Prefecture is famous for it. The “Jigoku Meguri”, aka the hell tour of Beppu, offered us EIGHT eye-opening moments. 6 of them are in Kannawa, while another 2 are in Shibaseki.

Visitors can reach there either on foot or by 16/16A bus. In my opinion, the most what-the-HELL spots are “Oniyama Jigoku”, where the crocodiles live in this monster mountain hell; and “Tatsumaki Jigoku”, featuring a geyser that erupted every 30 to 40 minutes.

A 70-minute bus connected us from Beppu to Yufuin, a popular hot spring resort. Most of the hotels provide pick-up service. Dinner and breakfast for a one-night stay are included. What is it but an authentic experience with elegant cuisine and unlimited onsen service.

Lake Kinrin is under Mount Yufu. It is believed that a Confucian named it in 1884, when he saw the scales of goldfish glittering with the sunset. Yunotsubo Street bridged the gap between the Lake and the train station. 50+ stores allowed us to grab our unique souvenirs.

I would also recommend Yufuin Mabushi Shin, a restaurant nearby the station. The claypot rice with 3 creative ways to eat, was definitely worthy of an hour queue. In Japanese, “Shin” literally means heart. This is how the Japanese turn food into art, filled with heart.

ようこそ、地獄へ

千年以上も前から、鉄輪（かんなわ）・亀川（かめがわ）の地獄地帯（ちたい）では、噴気（ふんき）や熱泥（ねつどろ）や熱湯（ねっと）などが噴出（ふんしゅつ）していました。近寄（ちかよ）ることもできない忌（い）み嫌（きら）われた土地（とち）だったといわれています。そのような背景（はいけい）から、「地獄」と呼ばれるようになりました。

別府地獄めぐりは７つ地獄からなっています。例えば、ワニを飼育（しいく）している鬼山（おにやま）地獄、灰色の熱泥が沸騰（ふっとう）する様子はまるで坊主頭のような鬼石（おにいし）坊主（ぼうず）地獄、そして、一定（いってい）の間隔（かんかく）で豪快（ごおかい）に噴（ふ）き出す熱水（ねっすい）がある龍巻（たつまき）地獄などがあります。

海地獄とは、硫酸鉄（りゅうさんてつ）が溶（と）け込（こ）んでいるために青色にみえる池（いけ）です。それだけでなく、この温泉が熱を利用（りよう）して、アマゾン原産（げんさん）の大鬼蓮（オオオニバス）や熱帯性睡蓮（ねったいせいすいれん）も栽培（さいばい）されています。

多様（たよう）な色彩（しきさい）と形態（けいたい）であることから、そのうちの四つの別府地獄は国の名勝（めいしょう）に指定（してい）されています。
